Sox Say Farewell To Manager John Farrell

The Boston Red Sox were knocked out of the Division Series by the Houston Astros in 4 games.  Once the series was over, word was that manager John Farrell wasn’t going to be back for the 2018 season.  The Red Sox made it official and are now looking for a new manager.

Farrell was hired as Manager of the Boston Red Sox prior to the 2013 season.  During his tenure he turned Boston into a winner.  His overall record was an impressive 432-378, 54 games above .500.  His winning percentage was .533.  Boston won the American League East Division three times with him including the last two seasons.  They missed the playoffs only twice under Farrell.

The problem was the success in the regular season didn’t translate to postseason success.  The Red Sox won the World Series in 2013.  After that, the Red Sox didn’t come close to winning a playoff series again.  In 2016 they were swept by the Cleveland Indians in the Division Series.  This season was the same story as they lost to the Astros.  Boston decided it was time to move on from Farrell after two Division series defeats.

According to USAToday.com, Farrell said in a statement, "I am grateful to an ownership group that gave me such a unique opportunity, and one that shared my desire to bring World Series championships to this great city.  They supported me through a challenging and scary period in my own life, and I remain forever indebted."

This was the wrong decision for Boston.  Not many managers stay in a city for 5 years, let alone win a World Series.  It is difficult to make the playoffs 3 times in that span as well as win 3 division titles.  Boston may not find a manager who will turn this team into a World Series winner for a few seasons.  They must have felt letting him go will allow this franchise to start over.
