The Boston Red Sox ended the season 93-69 and won the American League East division.  Unfortunately the year ended in game 4 of the American League Division Series with a loss to the Houston Astros.  Boston is looking to improve the team for the 2018 season.

The Red Sox don’t need to look at pitching.  They were a decent pitching team throughout the MLB season.  The Red Sox team ERA was 4th best in all of baseball with a 3.70 ERA. The starters' ERA was 4.06 while the relievers' was an impressive 3.15.

It’s hitting where the team must improve.  Batting average was .258 in the regular season (13th in all of Major League Baseball).  In the playoffs it was slightly better at .285.  The Red Sox have Dustin Pedroia locked up as their best hitter.  The team will look at free agency to improve the lineup.

Free agency is where they are going to enhance this team.  In the infield, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, and Zack Cozart are free agents who will make the Red Sox a dangerous team to pitch to.  They all can hit the long ball, get on base, and score runs.

Eric Hosmer hit .318, with 25 home runs and 94 RBI’s.  The Red Sox could use him at 1st.  He is not only a power hitter but a defensive factor in the infield as well.  He rarely makes an error with a total of only 4.  The only downside is that the Royals will be aggressive in their efforts to keep their 1st baseman.  The Red Sox must out bid the Royals for his services.

It’s the same for Mike Moustakas.  He can do everything at 3rd base that Eric Hosmer can do at 1st.  Moustakas was a .272 hitter and smacked 38 home runs.  The Royals will try to keep their All-Star third baseman.

The one batter whom they could sign is Cozart.  He is a shortstop who hit .297 with 24 home runs. He can hit to get on base.  Cozart is a decent shortstop who won’t allow the ball to get past him on hits and will start double plays.   The only problem with Cozart is he isn’t a batter who will drive in runs.  He can strike out with runners on. Cozart had a total of only 63 RBI’s.

The Red Sox are also going to look at outfielders.  One free agent that makes sense for the team is Jayson Werth.  Not only can he drive the ball into the gap and score runners, Werth can also play the outfield.  He rarely misses a play on the ball and has a strong arm to throw runners out trying to advance.  The Red Sox have plenty of options to boost this team into a World Series winner.
