J.D. Martinez A Free Agent, Would Boost The Red Sox's Outfield

The Boston Red Sox are looking to improve the outfield position.  If they don’t land Giancarlo Stanton in a trade, J.D. Martinez is the next best outfielder available.  Martinez is a free agent and the Red Sox wouldn’t have to trade for him.  All they would need to do would be to sign him to a contract.

Martinez will be entering his 8th Major League Baseball season.  He is a complete player at the plate.  Martinez can smack home runs, steal bases and drive in runs.  Last season he appeared in 57 games for the Detroit Tigers before being dealt to the Arizona Diamondbacks where he played another 62 games.  For the season he hit .303 with 45 home runs and 104 RBI’s.  Martinez is a threat to steal bases to be in scoring position with 4 stolen bases.

Martinez can play both right and left field.  He has played in more games in right field than left field in his career.  He rarely drops the ball in the outfield.  Martinez committed 6 errors last season.

The only downside for him is his arm.  Martinez doesn’t have the strong arm like Stanton to throw batters out on the base paths.  That could end up costing the Red Sox games.  Martinez had 3 outfield assists last year.

Martinez is probably the best right fielder in the open market.  The Red Sox must sign him to a contract.  Martinez will not be asking for $25 million a year for the next 11 years like Stanton.  He will cost between $12 and $15 million per year.  The Red Sox need to make the phone call soon to see what interest he has.  If they wait, they may strikeout on him and will be stuck still looking for an outfielder.
